APRIL 4: CIVIL
RIGHTS LEADER, MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. ASSASSINATED*
While in Memphis, Tennessee to support striking
sanitation workers, King is shot and killed on the balcony of
the Lorraine motel by James Earl Ray. Numerous riots break out
across the country in the following days. |

APRIL 7: NEWARK WALK
FOR UNDERSTANDING*
Following the riots of 1967, leaders bring together blacks and
whites in an effort to help revive long neglected areas of
Newark. The peaceful walk becomes a tribute to Martin Luther
King. |

APRIL 9-10: TRENTON
RIOTS*
Riots erupt in Trenton and throughout the country following the
assassination of Martin Luther King. The upscale shopping
district of Trenton is left in shambles. The same is repeated in
large cities across the U.S. |

APRIL 11: CIVIL
RIGHTS ACT OF 1968 SIGNED*
President Johnson signs the act that follows up the Civil Rights
Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination in housing and
protection for civil rights workers. |
APRIL 23-24:
COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY PROTESTS*
Students at Columbia University in New York, occupy campus
buildings in protest of the United States' involvement in Vietnam
and concern over the construction of a segregated gym to be
built in a local park.

SWAMP NAMED A NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
The Great Swamp, located mostly in Morris County, NJ, becomes
the first area designated as a national wilderness area. |
