SEPT 9: US OPEN*

 Arthur Ashe becomes the first, and only, African-American to win the tennis Grand Slam held at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, NY by defeating the Dutch champion, Tom Okker (14-12, 5-7, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3).

SEPT 11: BLACK PANTHER HEADQUARTERS ATTACKED*

Two Oakland, CA police officers are charged with firing bullets into a front window of Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver's presidential campaign headquarters. Cleaver is running on the Peace & Freedom Party ticket.

SEPT 24: CCM OPENS ITS DOORS TO THE FIRST CLASS

The County College fall semester begins with 592 full-time and 703 part-time students. It is the first NJ community college to open in a permanent building.

SEPT 24: 60 MINUTES DEBUTS*

CBS launches a new bi-weekly investigative newsmagazine with hosts Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner.

SEPT 30: FIRST JUMBO JET UNVEILED*

Boeing reveals its brand new jumbo jet to the awaiting press and the 26 companies who have ordered the planes at the Everett, Washington assembly plant. 

SEPT 30: THE MONKEES ARRIVE IN JAPAN*

The musical group, The Monkees, arrive at the Tokyo airport to screaming fans, mostly young Japanese girls. They will be touring Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
