 The convention to choose the republican candidate for president is held in Miami Beach, Florida. Richard Nixon (692 votes) wins the nomination over Nelson Rockefeller (277 votes) and Ronald Reagan (182 votes).

AUG 18: BIAFRAN RELIEF PROTEST*

Thousands of demonstrators march to the United Nations Building in New York City to bring to light the plight of the starving children of Biafra and petition for food and other relief supplies.

AUG 20: CZECH INVASION*

Soviet and Warsaw Pact allies invade Czechoslovakia in an attempt to stop partial democratization reforms and strengthen the communist control.

 

AUG 21: CCM OPENS HENDERSON HALL

CCM staff move into the new Academic building in preparation for the start of the Fall semester.

AUG 26-29: DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION*

Democrats meet in Chicago, Illinois to choose the democratic candidate for president. Hubert Humphrey (1759 votes) receives the nomination over Eugene McCarthy (601 votes) and George McGovern (146 votes).

AUG 22: POPE JOHN PAUL VI VISITS COLOMBIA*

The Pope arrives in Bogota, Colombia to attend the 39th International Eucharistic Congress. Huge crowds gather to greet him with cheers.
