 Thousands of hippies swamp the streets of San Francisco, the site of the 1967 "Summer of Love". Roads are closed at the request of local artists and businessmen, turning the gathering into a huge countercultural festival.

MARCH 16: MY LAI MASSACRE*

U.S. Army forces enter My Lai and massacre approximately 500 unarmed citizens of South Vietnam. The action spurs worldwide outrage and condemnation.

Celebrities, such as actress Vanessa Redgrave, join protestors in an anti-Vietnam war protest outside of the American embassy in London, England.

MARCH 29: SANITATION STRIKERS MARCH*

Memphis, Tennessee black sanitation workers march to city hall as they strike for better wages and working conditions. National Guard troops are charged with keeping the peace in the wake of violent eruptions.

MARCH 31: PRESIDENT JOHNSON WILL NOT RUN AGAIN*

With his popularity in decline due to the war in Vietnam, Lyndon Johnson announces that he will not seek re-election and will instead concentrate on peacemaking efforts.
