OCT 1: BATTLESHIP NEW JERSEY RE-COMMISSIONED*

 After being de-commissioned for the second time in 1957, USS New Jersey is again returned to action in Vietnam to support the troops.

OCT 10: BASEBALL WORLD SERIES*

The Detroit Tigers defeat the St. Louis Cardinals in 7 games by coming back to win three games in a row after having fallen behind in a 3-1 deficit. The series is dubbed the "year of the pitcher" with Mickey Lolich as MVP.

OCT 12-27: GAMES OF XIX OLYMPIAD*

The summer Olympics are held in Mexico City. The U.S. is the over all top medal winner with 107 medals. Two U.S. track and field athletes are banned from future competition after displaying a Black Power sign during their medal presentation.

 

OCT 18: JOHN LENNON & YOKO ONO ARRESTED*

Beatles member, John Lennon & his girlfriend, Yoko Ono, are arrested in London for marijuana possession. Lennon is fined $360 and charges are dropped against Ono.

OCT 20: CCM HOLDS FIRST OPEN HOUSE

The college invites the public to see their new community college.

OCT 31: PRESIDENT JOHNSON HALTS VIETNAM BOMBING*

In a taped address televised to the American people, the president declares a halt in bombing and announces an expansion of the Paris peace talks in an effort to end the Vietnam War.
