FEB. 6-18: X WINTER OLYMPICS*

 Norway walks away with the most medals from Grenoble, France. The U.S. is ranked 9th with 7 medals. Peggy Fleming wins the only U.S. gold medal in figure skating. For the first time, East and West Germany enter as separate countries.

FEB. 8: CIVIL RIGHTS RIOT IN ORANGEBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA*

After blacks are banned from a local private bowling alley, students from South Carolina State initiate a protest that escalates to riots that last for days. National Guard troops are sent out to keep the peace.

FEB. 12: JACKIE COLLINS PUBLISHES FIRST NOVEL*

The actress, Jackie Collins, publishes her first novel "The World is Full of Married Men". Book signing takes place in London, England.

 

FEB. 16: FIRST 9-1-1 SERVICE

The first test call of the emergency 9-1-1 system in the U.S. is made in Haleyville, Alabama. The service is already in place in Canada.  

FEB. 24: JANIS JOPLIN ON THE COVER OF ROLLING STONE*

Janis Joplin is recognized as an outstanding talent as she performs, along with her band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, on her first east coast tour. Up to this point, Joplin was not well known outside of California.

FEB 27:  STUDENTS ACCEPTED TO COUNTY COLLEGE OF MORRIS

The first seven students are accepted to begin their fall studies in the brand new college. The tuition rate is less than $400 per year.
