JULY 1: NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION TREATY SIGNED*

 The treaty, proposed by Finland, is brought about by concern for world safety with the advancement of nuclear weapons. It is signed by the three Nuclear Weapon States: the U.S., U.K., and Soviet Union.

JULY 4: GEN WESTMORELAND NEW US ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF*

William Westmoreland, who has been serving as commander of the American military operations in Vietnam, is sworn in as US Army Chief of Staff.

JULY 10: DR SPOCK JAILED*

Benjamin Spock receives a two year sentence for encouraging and aiding draft dodging. He is a regular speaker at meetings for "peace in Vietnam".

JULY 17: YELLOW SUBMARINE PREMIERES*

The movie, Yellow Submarine featuring the music of the Beatles, opens in London to rave reviews.

JULY 18: JAMES EARL RAY EXTRADITED TO US*

James Earl Ray arrives in the United States after being extradited from Britain on the grounds of complicity in the murder of Martin Luther King.

JULY 23: EL AL HIJACK*

An Israeli airliner is diverted to Algiers on a flight from Rome to TelAviv. Three members of the Front for the Liberation of Palestine, an Arab sabotage organization, carry out the attack.
